The days of harvest

Garden news!

We are now at the point where we have veggies to pick everyday. It has been so yummy to eat fresh tomatoes and cucumbers with our meals. Some days we feel like we can't keep up with all that is ready to be eaten. For dinner tonight we had grilled chicken sandwiches on garlic sourdough bread with cheese, cucumbers and tomatoes--Yum! We have 6 pumpkins right now, ranging in size from a softball to a volleyball. We have tons of peppers but they aren't quite ready to be picked. Big boy didn't make it he was weeded out of the garden a few weeks ago. I am sure he made for a very nice deer snake later that night. Our sunflowers are being eaten by funny looking green bugs, rather than trying to fix this problem I am letting nature do its thing. This means I watch the sunflowers open up and within a few days shrivel up and die. Very humbling.

We went out to fertilize/water the plants today. There was another snake in the garden. I don't like snakes. Remember? They make me feel all willy inside. I was going to weed my viney pumpkin and cucumber plants today but after seeing the snake (which was stuck in the mesh fence-and, I'm sorry, but I didn't feel the least bit sorry for the little slimy slithery thing). Anyways, I didn't weed, there was no way I was going to dig around and possibly see another one. So since the only two snakes I have seen have been in the garden, you'd think the snakes are just in the garden, right? Um no. As we were walking back to the house, Mallory on my dad's shoulders and me carrying our big bowl of harvested veggies, there was a snake slithering along in the grass. That's not even the worst part--Mallory spotted him after I had nearly stepped on him-- EWWWW. We followed him into the weeds where (again I am sorry) I hope he gets eaten by a deer or a rabbit--do they eat snakes?? Two snakes in one day. That's just not right. I hope I don't have a snake nightmare tonight.

I hate to end on such a disgusting note...next time I won't talk about snakes.
